The Hob Holes.

These are four caves (probably the result of mining for Whitby jet) on Runswick beach. If you're visiting the beach please don't go into the caves; folloing recent heavy rain the roof of one cave has collapsed:
If you were under that lot when it came down you wouldn't survive.

The rest of the caves are surrounded by cracks which are getting steadily larger. The hobs were (legend has it) local sprites that would cure you children of sore throats. Looks like they'll soon be homeless, as will the fulmars nesting above the caves:
